CQUniversity is a dual-sector university offering both tertiary education for Higher Education (HE) and Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses. With headquarters in Rockhampton, on Darumbal Country, the university was originally established in 1967 and is one of the largest universities based in regional Australia, with multiple campuses across the country.

The university delivers more than 250 education and training offerings to more than 30,000 students and is a pioneer in delivering distance education. Almost half of the current student cohort studies off-campus through online and mixed-mode delivery, many of whom are based in rural and remote areas.

Business Opportunity

CQUniversity was planning to transition its on-premise Syllabus Plus instance to TechnologyOne’s Timetabling & Scheduling SaaS cloud-based solution. Building on their positive experience with TechnologyOne’s Student Management System, CQUniversity wanted to leverage the modern integration solutions offered by the Timetabling & Scheduling solution.

The migration presented challenges that included navigating technical constraints, leveraging native functionality, and rewriting all existing inbound and outbound integrations while adapting to a new suite of integration tools. Recognising the need for additional expertise to maintain quality and meet project timelines, CQUniversity engaged Atturra to support the transition.

Drawing on their established relationship with Atturra since 2015, CQUniversity engaged the team to help them fully realise the potential of the integration solutions, facilitate data flow, minimise disruptions, and enable the smooth transition to the new SaaS Timetabling & Scheduling solution.

Solution

Atturra provided dedicated technical resources to lead the analysis, planning, documentation, development, testing and deployment of integrations between CQUniversity’s on-premise academic scheduling system, the SaaS-based Student Management System and Timetabling & Scheduling.

Initially, Atturra assessed the current state and suggested potential architectural designs. After determining how the new Timetabling and Scheduling integration interfaces and web services would work, the team identified what configuration pieces would be required.

Working collaboratively with the CQUniversity team, we reviewed and expanded vendor-produced data mapping documents and developed Proof of Concepts (PoCs).

The project required customised integrations and the development of a completely new integration between the on-premise academic scheduling system and TechnologyOne’s Timetabling & Scheduling solution. In collaboration with TechnologyOne, we also extended the use of available functionality within the Timetabling & Scheduling web services to ensure alignment with supported capabilities.

In conjunction with CQUniversity’s subject matter experts, we delivered extensive system testing and supported subsequent UAT activities. Atturra documented all data flows, configurations, and artefacts and produced deployment documentation. After deploying the solution into production, it went live in October 2024. Atturra continues to provide post-go-live support in collaboration with CQUniversity’s internal teams.

Outcomes achieved

The successful migration to Timetabling & Scheduling has established a robust, scalable integration framework that supports future digital transformation initiatives. By utilising modern integration methodologies, CQUniversity has accelerated its time-to-value for new system implementations.

With a more stable and supportable technology foundation, CQUniversity has improved its data management and near real-time processing. It can expand assistance for diverse student learning modes and is positioned as a more agile and responsive educational institution.

By leveraging Atturra’s knowledge and services, CQUniversity has addressed immediate technical challenges while laying the groundwork for continued technological innovation in regional higher education.
